    Good morning,

We tried using the ereader Nouns Supereheroes section today and it was marking correct answers as incorrect.

    Reply
    • Sometimes you have to refresh that one until it starts marking answers correctly. Not sure why. It generally happens the first time you try to take a “highlighting” test on a new machine. I’ve had a hard time reproducing the error, since it only occurs the first time you try to use the worksheets AFAICT tell. Try refreshing the page and let me know what happens.

Mr Morton, I would like to know if we do classify Gerund as a Part of Speech on its own or is it a verb? or a noun? My understanding was that it is a verb form acting as a noun hence it is a noun. e.g. I love reading. Here the verb is “love” whereas “reading” is a name of an activity that I love doing. Please advise me on this. And what about the articles? Are they not Part of Speech?

    Reply
    • I think gerunds, the noun forms of verbs, are usually classified as nouns. In your example, “reading” is a thing that you love to do, an object that gets acted on.

Some people consider articles to be adjectives. Others prefer to categorize them as a part of speech all of their own. I am part of the latter group.

      I hope that helps!

Yes, thank you. That helped so much. I was thinking about the flowers thing on the way to work today and realized that the sentence warrants an adjective because smelled functions more like a verb of being rather than an action. (although I suppose flowers could be good smellers, haha. How would we know?) Thank you for giving me a challenge to ponder. I like how these examples help students see the difference between what “sounds right” and what is correct grammatically. It makes you think about whether an adj or adv is needed. Thanks again!

Ok. I need some help on the adjectives anadverbs worksheet. #8, 9, 10. Would we say “she ran down the hallway carzily?” or answered the question “wrongly?” Do flowers smell “well?” Although these answers I believe would be grammatically correct, it is not the way we speak. So I am wondering what answers other teachers would give. I didn’t see an answer key. Thanks!!

    • The rules of language are often at odds with actual use.
I haven’t made keys for these yet.

      I hope to this summer.

      People run crazily.

      Flowers smell good.
The reason we say good instead
of well is a particular use case.

In the case of senses, we use good
instead of well because the flowers

      are not doing the smelling.
If we were describing how well
the flowers were able to perceive odors,
we would be correct in saying that
      the flowers smell well.

Otherwise, if we are describing the scent,
      we say it smells good.

The same applies to the other senses.
      Hence, the cookies taste good.

I hope that helps a bit.
